The ERPNext alternative for people without a sysadmin.
ERPNext costs nothing to licence and is a genuinely impressive piece of open-source engineering with a real community behind it. It also needs Docker or a bench installation, Redis, a queue worker, a scheduler and somebody who understands all of them. This page is about the difference between a free licence and a low total cost.
The short version
If you have someone who can run a Linux server, ERPNext is free and excellent, and you should probably use it. If you do not, the honest total cost is a managed hosting plan at $50 to $125 a month, or a consultant on retainer, or your own evenings. Our $9 exists for the third case.

ERPNext hosting prices are Frappe Cloud's published rates in August 2026. Self-managing on a $20 VPS is cheaper in cash and considerably more expensive in attention, which is the trade this whole page is about.
What free actually costs
ERPNext's licence is free and that is real. The cost sits elsewhere, and it is worth being specific rather than hand-waving:
- A server you administer. Not shared hosting. A VPS with Docker or a bench installation, Redis, a scheduler, background workers and Nginx. Somebody patches that operating system.
- Upgrades that can go wrong. A major ERPNext upgrade is a real operation. Done casually on a production instance it can and does break things, which is why so many installations sit several versions behind.
- Configuration depth. ERPNext is more configurable than we are, which is a genuine strength and also means more decisions before you can raise your first invoice. Implementation partners exist because that work is real.
- Support with no single owner. The forum is helpful and the community is generous. Neither is a vendor with an obligation to you at 4pm on a Friday. Paid support from Frappe or a partner is available and is a real cost.
None of that makes ERPNext a bad choice. It makes it a choice with a prerequisite, and the prerequisite is a person. If your business has that person, the honest advice is to use ERPNext and keep your $108 a year.
Where we are genuinely better
Time from decision to working system, measured in minutes rather than days. Installability without a command line. Running on hosting you already have. One vendor who is accountable for a defect. And a considerably gentler first hour, which matters more than experienced people remember.
Where ERPNext is genuinely better
Accounting depth including unlimited accounting dimensions. Manufacturing depth. Payroll depth, particularly for India. The DocType model, which lets you create entirely new record types without writing code, and which we deliberately did not attempt to reimplement. And the fact that you can read, fork and keep the source forever, which no encoded product can offer.
When they are the better choice.
Genuinely. These are not straw men.
You have a developer or a sysadmin
Then the prerequisite is met, the licence is free, and the source is yours. Genuinely: use ERPNext. We would rather you did that than pay us and resent it.
You need custom record types
The DocType system lets you build entirely new models without code. Our custom fields and forms are useful but they are not that, and we do not pretend they are.
You are in India and need deep statutory payroll
ERPNext's Indian payroll and GST support is mature, widely deployed and community-tested at a depth our country pack does not yet match.
You want a community rather than a vendor
Forums, a large contributor base, conferences and independent partners. There is real value in not depending on one small company, and we are one small company.
About switching.
Can I move from ERPNext to Gyro Suite?
Yes, through ERPNext's CSV export and our importer. Customers, suppliers, items, open invoices, open bills and a trial balance for the opening position all map cleanly, because both systems use conventional accounting structures. Custom DocTypes have no direct equivalent and need remodelling as custom fields, which is the part worth scoping before you commit.
Why not just build on Frappe?
We looked at it seriously. The DocType metamodel is elegant and it is also a bespoke framework: dynamic schema, unusual query patterns, and a much smaller pool of developers who know it. For a product that has to install on shared hosting and be maintainable by a small team, code-first Eloquent models with a bounded custom-fields engine was the more sustainable choice. That is a trade-off, not a criticism.
Is Gyro Suite as capable as ERPNext?
No, and we would be embarrassed to claim it. ERPNext is deeper in accounting dimensions, manufacturing and payroll, and it has years of community hardening we do not have. We are easier to install, cheaper to run, and accountable to you as a vendor. Those are different things to want.
You are closed source and they are open. Why should I trust you?
You should not trust us on the strength of a marketing page. Trust the parts you can verify: a live demo with no signup, a dated changelog, published system requirements with honest limits, a written continuity commitment if we stop trading, a 14-day trial, a 30-day refund, and a licence design where exports and backups keep working even if you stop paying. Those are all checkable today.
Compare it properly.
Fourteen days with your own customers, your own invoices and your own chart of accounts beats any table on any website.
